We chose the name Grid North Partners to reflect the challenges we face as transmission owners in the north. We know our system better than anyone else – we are the best advocates for reliability.

Our partners provide reliable service to nearly 3 million electric customers, consumers, and members across Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. We are national leaders in planning, building, and maintaining a reliable transmission system capable of using the most cost-effective resources available.

HISTORY

We formed in 2004 as CapX2020, a joint initiative to upgrade and expand the transmission grid in the Upper Midwest, meet the growing demand for electricity, support job and population growth, and increase access to renewable energy sources.

The CapX2020 utilities collaborated to build more than 800 miles of new high-voltage transmission infrastructure in the Upper Midwest, securing safe, reliable and essential electricity for customers and opening new outlets for renewable energy built throughout the region. The projects, located in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin, came in on time and under budget.

Since completion of the final project in 2017, CapX2020 has continued to stay connected and remains active in state and federal transmission policy matters. In 2020, we released the CapX2050 Transmission Vision Report.

READY FOR THE FUTURE

Grid North Partners is depending on the partnership we’ve developed while expanding our transmission capacity. Our collective experience, knowledge and relationships will help ensure a reliable electric grid for our customers.
